Project Overview
Himalayan glaciers are retreating and it can expose bottom topography, leading to new lakes formation, if slopes are over deepening. It can cause flash flood. Therefore, we are planning to develop new methods and models to estimate location, volume and period of new lake formation. In addition, we will also predict maximum expansion of existing glacier lakes. We are proposing to develop models to estimate glacier depth, mass balance and lake volume. Glacier depth will be estimated using laminar ice flow model and validated using Ground Penetrating Radar. Mass balance will be modeled using Temperature Index method and validated using geodetic, AAR and glaciological methods. Future projection will be done using temperature index and climatic models. Lake volume will be validated using sonar technique and flood estimate will be made using hydrodynamic model. This will be unique contribution to improve safety and security of mountain community.
