Project Overview

The research aims to develop instrumentation using a hollow tube and Hollow-Core Photonic Band Fiber (HC-PBF) based photoacoustic interferometry for the detection of trace biomarkers in exhaled breath. Photoacoustic interferometry with a pump beam in the mid-IR region (2-6 µm) and a probe beam in the visible range can facilitate the development of highly compact and sensitive trace gas instrumentation. The developed technique will be used to demonstrate sensing biomarkers, such as ammonia and acetone trace gases in exhaled breath. The technique can be extended for monitoring other biomarkers in exhaled breath, pollutants in industrial plants and the air.
