Project Overview

The project aims to establish a link between dried fish and fermented fish products, Hukoti and Shidal, and their antimalarial properties. The research will use lab cultured and field isolates of Plasmodium falciparum to evaluate the antimalarial activity of these fish. In vivo antipyretic studies will be conducted using Wistar rat species to explore the fever-reducing properties of the preparations. The project also aims to standardize the dried and fermented fish as an inexpensive, hygienic preparation for communities with limited access to modern medicines. The main experiments will involve collecting raw material, subjecting it to solvents, chemical profiling, in vitro screening against Plasmodium falciparum, in vivo antipyretic activity, and formula development. The successful validation of this theory will provide a cheap alternative to standard antimalarial drugs for people living in isolated areas of North East India.
