Project Overview

Arsenic, a common environmental toxins, has been linked to neurotoxic effects on the gut microbiota. Seaweed polysaccharides, which are FDA-approved food ingredients, have potential for use in cognition management. Researchers aim to extract and chemically characterize these polysaccharides from seaweeds and prepare their oligomers. The extracts will be evaluated in a validated rodent model against inorganic arsenic exposure-induced cognitive impairments. The study also aims to identify new therapeutic options for treating SYNGAP1-related Intellectual Disability (ID) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children. A small molecule activator, TTK21, has been found to induce long-term memory and assist in the complete recovery of memory in Alzheimer's mice.
