The activation of different neuronal networks in the brain can be the basis for mental states, ranging from meditative to anxious. These altered states of consciousness need to be studied to determine the underlying basis of processing cognition during normality and psychiatric states. The changes in resting state networks need to be studied to understand the neural correlates of meditation and its consequence on the processing of stimuli during ensuing behavioral states. EEG is an important tool for studying the temporal dynamics of the human brain's large-scale neuronal circuits, and its dynamics can be used to dissociate different brain networks spontaneously engaged and disengaged during varied states like meditation or anxiety and stress. The study proposes to assess the microstates and resting EEG sources in experienced meditators, occasional meditators, novice meditators, acutely stressed subjects, chronically stressed subjects, and patients with depression and schizophrenia compared to age-matched healthy controls. The findings will be translated from a 128 channel EEG system to a portable wireless system for application in meditation training centers and clinics.
