Project Overview

North Indian Ocean has been known as net CO2 sink. Many studies have been conducted to understand and quantify the variability of CO2 pathway in the Arabian Sea. However, its eastern counterpart, Bay of Bengal (BoB), is explored less (George et al., 1994; Sarma et al., 2011; Shanthi et al., 2016). Moreover, BoB is a semi-enclosed basin, receives huge riverine (freshwater and sediments) discharge and prone to cyclones. Poor sampling over this region remains a constraint to explore the sea – air CO2 exchange. However, recent satellite-based approaches for assessments of surface water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) distributions and air-sea fluxes of CO2 have received great momentum due to high quality observations and are potentially powerful to provide broad spatial coverage and extended temporal coverage as well.
