About
The studies reveal that 30-40 % of the total power generation is consumed in the residential and commercial buildings worldwide, and is expected to rise further due to the increased usage of electric appliances and electronic devices. This usage of the electricity can be reduced by 5-15 %, with an accurate real-time monitoring of power consumption at the appliance-level in residential and commercial sector [1]. Moreso, in traditional power systems, loads could not be controllable. This has led to an unnecessary annual investment in generation capacity. Demand response (DR) has come up as a good solution, which is specially attractive at residential/building-level because residences/buildings have many demand-responsive loads.
The smart homes concept has lately been evolved to assist in this very process by providing integral solutions for the households to carry out efficient energy management in an automatic manner. However, the cost of building smart home is still much higher. Also, majority of the existing households do not have smart built-in capabilities, and therefore, could not participate in energy management process. With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, it is now possible to design and develop modular solutions that can be incorporated in the existing residential sector, thereby, making them
smart too. Since these solutions are relatively cheaper and bring the benefits of smart home solutions to all, such modular solutions are gaining lot of popularity among residents, utilities, policy-makers, and appliance manufacturers. This motivates the PI and the team to take up the research on design and development of Efficient Energy management System for Residential Grid, with the following set objectives.
