Project Overview

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is the emission of left- and right-handed circularly polarized light by a chiral luminescent molecule. It provides information about excited-state chirality and is quantified by the luminescence dissymmetry factor glum. CPL-active materials have gained interest due to their potential applications in spintronics-based devices, 3D displays, optical information storage, sensors, and lasers. However, their practical applicability depends on their glum and quantum yield in the solid or condensed state. Lanthanide complexes have high glum due to magnetic anisotropy but low oF due to limited structural designs, rarity, and toxicity. Chiral synthesized organic molecules (SOMs) have gained attention due to their advantages, but they show modest glum in the solution state and negligible oF due to aggregation-caused quenching. To address these issues, boron chemistry expertise is being used to develop boron-doped chiroptic materials. Synthesized luminophores will be screened for optoelectronic materials development and CP bio-imaging. This project aims to better understand the functional properties of chiral luminophores and may lead to the development of next-generation smart materials.
