The 2021 Assam and 2023 Turkey earthquakes underscore the need for better understanding of active fault systems in a region to minimize damage to infrastructure and human populations. seismic vulnerability assessment is crucial, requiring seismotectonic studies and compilation of past earthquake events. The northeastern Himalaya has experienced numerous earthquakes, including the 1947 Arunachal Pradesh EQ, 1950 Assam EQ, 1988 Manipur EQ, 2009 Assam EQ, 2011 sikkim EQ, 2016 Imphal EQ, and 2021 Assam EQ. The shillong Plateau has also experienced earthquakes, including the 1897 great earthquake. The Holocene earthquake history of the shillong plateau is less studied. A questionnaire-based survey and geological study conducted by PI (Mayank Joshi) under a NMHs funded project aimed to understand the impact of natural hazards on the socio-economic fabric in the shillong region. The study identified sites preserving active faulting signatures and houses built in slopes prone to earthquake-induced landslides. The proposed study is essential for studying the tectonically active segments of the shillong plateau and understanding the palaeo-earthquake history to minimize seismic hazards.
