Climate change is the one of the most debated topic in the recent decades. The causes of global warming trends are associated with the increase in greenhouse gases along with the changes in land cover and land use patterns. In terms of climate change mitigation, if this sOC is destabilized and liberated as carbon-based greenhouse gases (GHG), it would easily induce massive self-amplifying sOC-climate interactions. Ladakh being a cold desert in the Trans-Himalaya region is highly vulnerable to climate change mostly due to anthropogenic activities. Land-use change due to expansion of tourism industry, excessive vehicular pollution during peak season and unsustainable agricultural practices (usage of chemical fertilizers), all leads to degradation of the quality of soil and increase in the carbon emission into the atmosphere which is putting Ladakh region on a negative roadmap, while on the other hand, there is a vision of central government to make Ladakh Carbon Neutral. This project will mainly focus on sustainable soil management practices at grass-root level so as to reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses and to mitigate climate change. Literature is very scare in terms of soil organic carbon stock and nutrient status of Ladakh region and not even a single extensive study has been done till date in district Kargil of UT Ladakh. so this study will be an attempt to generate first ever baseline data of district Kargil of UT Ladakh which will be made available to the researchers, farmers in particular and all the stake holders to make them aware of the consequences of global warming due to unsustainable soil management practices.
