Project Overview

A battery management system (BMs) is a computer that monitors the functioning of an electric vehicle's battery pack. It uses an algorithm based on battery chemistry parameters, including current, voltage, and temperature. Monitoring batteries is challenging due to their complex electrochemical nature and non-linear behavior. Aging-induced changes in battery characteristics make it increasingly difficult to monitor. A good BMs requires precise and reliable monitoring. However, BMs algorithms often fail to accurately predict battery pack vitals when operating at varied ambient temperatures. This study aims to develop models based on soft computing techniques for state or condition monitoring of electric vehicle battery packs in Indian climatic conditions. A state-of-the-art battery pack cycling and testing setup will be developed, and data will be obtained from experiments on battery packs under real drive cycles. The models will be interfaced with BMs hardware, and the performance of the BMs will be optimized and validated against real-time conditions. This study will lead to a systematic approach to condition monitoring for battery packs of varying form factor and chemistry under different operating conditions.
