Facet-dependent ferroic properties: From creation to crafting the crystallographic edges for topological functionalities

Project Overview

Perovskite oxides like BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and BiFeO3 are widely explored ferroic materials due to their excellent functionalities in various fields, including nano or micro sensors, actuators, energy harvesters, and memory devices. Recent trends in miniaturization have led to the realization of these materials in epitaxial thin films. With rapid progress in nanomaterial fabrication, the future holds potential for designing new applications and understanding ferroic materials. Ferroics have unique features and functionalities, such as superelasticity under mechanical and electrical fields. However, major research has focused on semiconducting materials for optoelectronic and catalytic properties. Facet-dependent properties are well-demonstrated in ferroics, with recent reports showing unique topological structures like vortices and skyrmions. Challenges in studying facet-dependent properties in ferroics include breaking spontaneous polarization due to charge balance, using advanced electron microscopic techniques and ferroic property analysis systems, and achieving uniform size in synthesis methods. This work explores facet-dependency of ferroic materials for topological functionalities.
