Project Overview

Plant-specific NAC transcription factors (TFs) are crucial in various biological processes, including seed germination, flowering, and stress responses. Membrane-bound NAC transcription factors (NACMTFs) are a special group that remain anchored to the internal or cellular membrane and resume activity upon detachment. These bound MTFs could potentially act as sensors for rapid gene regulation. This project proposal focuses on the newly discovered MTF slNACMTF3, which is differentially expressed and activated in multiple tissues and stresses throughout tomato life. Research is ongoing to understand the molecular mechanism of activation of slNACMTF3 and its biological significance. The study aims to analyze the major mode of regulation of slNACMTF3, molecular mechanisms, and physiological processes controlled by the MTF. Observations will help understand the signaling processes that are rapidly regulated when the plant perceives stress. This study will generate scope and resources for research investigating why certain biological signaling events are controlled by a transcription factor present in the system in an inactive form. A broader understanding of MTFs' role will facilitate devising strategies to impart stress resilience in tomato plants via biotechnological or fast-forward breeding approaches.
