Project Overview

The study aims to investigate the space-time structure of Indian monsoon rainfall, its sub-seasonal, seasonal, and decadal variability, and the statistics of extreme events in India's climate. The research will use observations and model data to explore new teleconnections and predictability sources, particularly from extra-tropical regions. The study will also analyze the evolution of ISMR teleconnections under different projection scenarios and develop new empirical prediction models. The study will also explore the use of high-resolution RCMs for dynamical downscaling of ESM forecasts, aiming to improve the prediction skill of sub-seasonal-to-decadal ISMR. Climate change is causing an increase in extreme weather and climate events, making accurate and timely predictions crucial for India. This requires a multi-pronged approach, including classical methods, process-based studies, and observations. The study aims to develop AI/ML-based nonlinear prediction models for Indian summer monsoon rainfall, focusing on sub-seasonal, intra-seasonal, interannual, and decadal timescales. The research will identify new predictable drivers of Indian summer monsoon rainfall, a unified theory of monsoon predictability, improved coupled climate modeling systems, AI/ML-based prediction models, and adaptation strategies for extreme events.
