Project Overview

The global increase in extreme climate events, such as droughts and floods, is a significant threat to human society. This proposal aims to investigate the mechanisms leading to drought conditions in monsoon regions, focusing on Brazil, India, and China. The study will use HPC Earth System Modeling and Machine Learning techniques to understand the impact of volcanic eruptions on drought conditions and the ocean-atmosphere-land coupled feedbacks arising from these events. The research will also analyze past and present volcanic forcing data, paleoclimatic reconstructions, and climate indices to establish causal links between droughts and volcanism. The research plan aims to understand the mechanism influencing monsoon hydroclimatic response due to volcanic forcing, reducing uncertainty in near-term precipitation changes. It will quantify the role of stratospheric volcanic aerosols on monsoon droughts and improve near-term climate projections. The international collaboration between India, Brazil, and China will share observational data, ESM simulation results, AI/ML techniques, and scientific expertise to improve seasonal monsoon forecasting. The project will also quantify the impacts of tropical deforestation on hydro-climatic variability and change.
