Project Overview
The project aims to develop a single unit bio-reactor using Denitrifying Bacteria (DPAOs) to achieve simultaneous nutrient removal and phosphorous recovery from municipal wastewater. Key activities include enriching and characterizing DPAOs, finding suitable and inexpensive alternatives, designing and developing a single unit bioreactor for phosphorous recovery, and evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of the proposed process for pilot study and field applications. The research will involve sludge samples from full-scale bio-reactors, sludge samples, and agar plates. The DPAOs will be enriched and characterized under different experimental conditions, and waste/by-products will be used as carbon sources for the heterotrophic DPAOs. The design and development of the single unit bioreactor SUB will be fabricated using poly-acrylic sheets and divided into three segments. The techno-economic assessment (TEA) will provide in-depth knowledge about the technical performance of the SUB, and pilot scale reactors will be developed and used for phosphorous recovery from mainstream municipal waste water. The project aims to develop a DPAO consortia for simultaneous nitrogen removal and phosphorous recovery from domestic wastewater, using waste-based resources as carbon sources and biocarriers for sustainable nutrient removal and phosphorous recovery from domestic wastewater.
