The Kangra region in NW Himalaya is a unique case of an 80 km wide Sub-Himalayan belt in India with sub-parallel thrust faults. The area is considered part of the India-Asia convergence through active thrusting, localized uplift, and strike-slip faulting. The region has a potential of an Mw 7 earthquake or greater, and the project aims to map high strain zones and reassess seismic hazard and risk. The project aims to reconcile discrepancies between various tectonic, kinematic, and geodetic models and provide a more realistic view of the regional seismotectonic setting. The project also aims to evaluate whether a significant change in stress can lead to critical values and the reactivation of faults affecting the region close to the daMs. The project will involve scientific exchange through visits, where Indian researchers will train in the interpretation and analysis of cutting-edge InSAR technique results and space-borne methodologies to assess surface deformation. The project will also benefit the Italian partners by working with local experts in the tectonics and seismic hazard of the Sub-Himalayan region.
