Project Overview

The project aims to develop methods for sustainable capture of flue gases by microalgae and production of bioelectricity and biofuel. It will isolate new strains of microalgae for efficient CO2 absorption, establish symbiotic microbial consortia of microalgae and heterotrophic bacteria or yeast for electricity generation and algal biomass production, and cultivate microalgae on wastewater to reduce production costs. The project will also develop a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) coupled with photobioreactor for bioelectricity and algal biomass generation. The kinetics and efficiency of CO2 and other flue gases captured by algae and their consortia with bacteria or yeast will be studied at pilot scale. The project will also assess the potential and efficiency of pilot-scale CO2 disposal in the form of biochar obtained after hydrothermal carbonation HTC of algal biomass. The project will coordinate researchers from different backgrounds and departments at Graphic Era University, Joint Institute for High Temperatures of Russian Academy of Sciences, to advance a sustainable, environmentally friendly process for integrating bioelectricity and biofuel production at pilot scale.
