Wearable technologies are rapidly growing, integrating antenna systems within textile fabric for body-centric communication systems, particularly in search and rescue operations. These systems gather information for timely identification and localization, helping to locate distressed persons in disaster scenarios. The project aims to develop a wearable antenna system for an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), optimize the active antenna system with low-noise and/or power amplifiers, integrate the system into a life vest, and add energy harvesting and global navigation satellite system functionality. The research plan includes characterization of textile materials, simulation, fabrication, integration, and final verification. The proposal focuses on developing an advanced flexible wearable communication system for satellite-based search and rescue. The system uses an active wearable antenna system, co-designed with filters and amplifiers, leveraging an electro-textile on a wearable substrate. The Indian and Belgian institutions aim to strengthen their expertise in body-centric communication and wearable antenna systems by exploring this application. The Indian collaborators seek collaboration with Belgian counterparts to exploit advanced manufacturing technology for designing high-performance textile communication systems for real-life applications. The expected outcomes include significant scientific contributions and joint publication and patents.
