About
Tissue engineering is a field of biomedical research that focuses on developing therapeutic procedures using functional materials that can influence biological systems. Artificial extracellular matrices (ECMs) based on biomaterials and biopolymers can generate or stimulate specific biological functions by regulating cell behavior. However, the field faces challenges, particularly in the biomimicry of natural ECM architectures. The current project aims to develop nanocellulose-based bio-mimicking structures for tissue engineering and regenerative medicines. Nanocellulose, such as bacterial cellulose BC and plant cellulose, has unique structural, physico-chemical, mechanical, and biological properties, and has potential applications in wound dressing materials, burns, artificial skin, and tissue regeneration. The study aims to identify novel cellulose-producing bacterial strains and develop genetically engineered microbial strains for improved BC production. The project also aims to develop in vitro synthesis approaches and alternative methods for fabricating novel cellulose-based functional materials. The bioprinting will be carried out at ultra-low temperatures using cryogenic extrusion printing to overcome shortcomings in cell viability, bioink formulations, and 3D printed scaffold properties.
