Project Overview

3D printed concrete (3DPC) has the potential to revolutionize construction by automating the process using robotic technology. This technique involves placing concrete in thin layers using a computer-controlled extruder, saving time and money, increasing worker safety, and providing design flexibility. It reduces construction waste and CO2 emissions, and eliminates the need for formwork. 3DPC is a promising solution to housing shortages worldwide, particularly in remote and rural areas with limited access to construction workers and materials. However, barriers to full adoption include incorporating sustainability into concrete mix design, incorporating structural reinforcement, and lack of verification through structural testing. The research aims to develop sustainable seismic-resistant 3DPC buildings through experimental testing and computer simulations at both material and structural levels. The research will benefit Canadian and Indian communities by facilitating the large-scale application of 3DPC structures, leading to easier access to affordable, sustainable, and resilient housing.
