Project Overview

Conventional contact machining of brittle materials like Fused silica, Zerodur etc introduces sub surface cracks and stress at the optics application surface. Hence the performance of the optical sensors cannot be met. The project aims to develop a plasma gun which is capable of removal of the material from the substrate by non-contact method. So it minimizes the sub surface damage and increases the yield of the processes.Plasma polishing at atmospheric pressure utilizes only surface chemical reaction to remove the substrate material by converting it to volatile molecules; hence it is purely chemical in nature and removes the material atom by atom.
