Conventional power systems contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, and a transition to low-carbon renewable energy sources is inevitable. Countries like India and Germany are focusing on energy security and carbon neutrality, with Germany aiming to fulfill 80 percent of load demand through renewable energy by 2030 and India aiming to install 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. This large share of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) integration imposes technical and operational challenges on the existing power system, necessitating additional flexibility to meet load-generation imbalances.
To incorporate the large proportion of variable and intermittent renewable energy sources, both supply and demand-side flexibility sources must be explored. The e-transport sector requires adequate power system planning to analyze its impact on peak demand and existing power system expansion requirements. Flexibility planning in the power sector is a complex optimization problem that requires quantification of future flexibility needs and understanding of existing flexibility levels.
This project aims to develop a planning model that considers the mutual implications and flexibility of electricity and transport sectors to provide optimal choices for low-carbon pathways. This involves generation expansion planning considering flexibility avenues from the decarbonized transportation sector and designing a flexibility market considering the transportation sector to address operational issues in the power grid.
