About

Triple perovskite materials with the chemical formula A3BM2O9 are a family of materials with varying cations, allowing for the creation of various functionalities. Recent synthesises of Ba3CuSb2O9, Ba3NiSb2O9, and related materials have shown the formation of quasi-2D triangular layers separated by nonmagnetic layers, exhibiting various novel quantum phases, including a spin liquid phase. The magnetic properties of Ba3CuTa2O9 and Ba3MnTa2O9 have not been studied yet. Iridium-based materials, such as Ba3MIr2O9, offer a playground for quantum magnetism. The Indian PI has synthesized polycrystalline and single crystal samples of Ba3InIr2O9, which exhibit spin liquid behavior. The collaborative research project aims to discover and explore new candidate materials for frustrated magnetism from 3d and 5d-based transition metal-based oxides. Techniques are available in India and/or Germany, including solid-state reaction at IIT ISM Dhanbad, flux growth technique at IFW Dresden, and traveling solvent optical floating zone technique at IFW Dresden. High-quality samples synthesized will be used for magnetization, thermodynamics, and NMR experiments, revealing the magnetic behavior of the materials. Experimental results and their analysis will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at national and international conferences. Junior researchers will be trained in the synthesis of novel quantum materials, advanced characterization techniques, data analysis, and reporting the results to the scientific community.
