Project Overview

The project will undertake statistical analysis two datasets, viz. Census of India 2011 and Mission Antyodya 2019, to identify stylized facts pertaining to transformation of rural India which in turn can inform the future of India’s urbanization. The objective is to answer five questions. 1. How has the distribution of villages by size class of population changed in the decade of 2010 ? 2. How have the differences at sub-national level in the above distribution changed in the decade of 2010? 3. How do measures of rurality based on socio-economic classification, and strength of rural-urban continuum and urban-influence vary at the sub-national level? 4. How important are distance of the village to the nearest town and characteristics of the town as correlates of population growth of villages? 5. How many villages or cluster of villages are likely to be classified as urban at the time of Census of India 2022 given their level of population, population density and non-farm employment in 2019?
