Project Overview

Aim is to conduct a multi-disciplinary theoretical research program under the common thread—“Topological Quantum Waves”—addressing fundamental problems in the frontier of theoretical quantum and condensed matter physics. The overarching research and education goal of this program is the understanding of novel phases of matter with exceptional features determined by the topology of underlying wavefunction manifolds related to single and many-body systems. The nature of our research will be theoretical innovation led by advanced mathematical theory, modelling and computing. At the outset, the primary goal of the research program is to investigate: the two emerging fields of topological and non-Hermitian physics in a synergetic way. These investigations are inspired by the long-term goal of using topological materials as components in next generation “topological” quantum computer and devices for ultrafast and robust information processing, yet the focus here is on the fundamental science aspects and the investigation and discovery of new and unconventional topological phenomena: such as “fractional” topological charge, nonabelian gauge field, topological superconductor, non-Hermitian topological band theory, topological skin-effect, topological amplification, to mention a few. The theoretical breakthroughs in this research program will advance the understanding of topological many-body processes which is exceedingly challenging otherwise, will benefit to overcome current limitations of devices, and will pioneer novel applications by innovative theoretical strategies.
