Project Overview

Imidaozlium (Im) salts and N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are well known organic molecules. They have been established as the most useful, versatile molecules due to its synthetic flexibility, structural diversity and most importantly the scope of these molecules in variety of applications such as ligands in metal catalysis, organocatalysts, green ionic liquids, energy storage material, sensor applications and so many other important applications. Incorporation of chirality into these molecules further refines the structure of these molecules, in the beginning it started with introduction of chiral moiety and interestingly it gave very interesting properties such as chiral ionic liquids. However, with the introduction of bulky aryl units around NHCs induces steric crowding, in this scenario imidaolzolium salts or NHCs upon multiarylation generates a unique axially chiral molecules, But the studies pertianing to this kind of molecules are limited in-spite of interesting structural properties due to the synthetic, isolation and characterisation challenges. Therefore this work focusses on synthesizing such less studied axially chiral imidazolium salts and explore its catalytic and material applications.
