Project Overview

This research project aims to assess the strength characteristics of soils and loose rocks in Uttarakhand's slopes, particularly along the Rishikesh to Rudraprayag and Rudraprayag to Mana Village (Badrinath) routes. The project focuses on slope stability assessment along these routes, which are common during the monsoon season and require extensive resource allocation and time-intensive solutions. The Char Dham All Weather Highway Development Project is significant due to its strategic importance and pilgrimage. The project aims to identify critical sections in the 300 km stretch of highway, conduct experimental studies to assess soil and rock strength, explore causes of slope failure using LEM software, and perform parametric studies of various slope stabilization solutions using LEM analysis software. It also aims to prepare an easy-to-understand guide for maintaining slopes in safe conditions. Various slope geometry with geomaterial properties and geotechnical conditions will be investigated, including gravity walls, retaining walls, gabions, MSE wall, soil nails, and rock bolts. Laboratory testing will be conducted to assess soil and rock strength, and particle size analysis will be performed using a Heavy-Duty Sieve Shaker. Representative samples will be tested using the Electronic Direct Shear Apparatus. The project's output will be shared with various governmental agencies responsible for construction activities in the region, such as residential and transportation projects. The outcome will provide valuable knowledge for executives, planners, and supervisors who lack extensive geotechnical engineering experience.
