Project Overview

Climate change and human influence have significantly impacted flood-generating mechanisms and intensity and frequency in various parts of the world. However, the mechanisms behind flood generation are not fully exploited, especially in arid and semi-arid regions of India, where the impact of climate change and human influence is significant during the monsoon season. This study aims to examine the various flood-generating processes linked to human activities and climate change, which control the duration, intensity, extent, severity, and time of flood occurrence. The study will evaluate meteorological, hydrological, and catchment conditions at different temporal and spatial scales before large flood events to identify dominated flood processes and contributing areas in the arid and semi-arid regions. The hydrological modeling will be used to analyze the dominating flood processes in Rajasthan and Gujarat under the changing and human-influenced hydrological system. This understanding will be useful for flood management, prediction, and mitigation in the region. The proposed research will help develop an effective understanding of flood processes in arid and semi-arid regions, potentially extending to the entire India.
