About
Rapid industrialization leads to significant contamination of consumable water, affecting biota and causing critical medical conditions. Heavy metal ions, a major concern, can cause significant health issues. Conventional detectors require electrolyte usage, complex chemicals, bulky equipment, and skilled personnel. This project aims to create a low-cost, portable, high-shelf-life, reusable heavy metal ion detection system capable of selectively detecting Cu(II), Zn(II), Fe(II)/Fe(III), and Ni(II) ions in consumable water. The project involves designing and fabricating a sensor array, optimizing sensor performance, designing interfacing circuitry with signal processing algorithms, and field integration and testing. The end product will be a hand-held detector unit capable of estimating heavy metals in consumable water, which is more user-friendly, cost-efficient, and robust compared to existing systems. This system can be applied in various applications, such as water quality monitoring and agricultural soil monitoring, and can be directly applied for mass usage due to its high specificity, simple design, and user-friendly operation procedures.
