Project Overview

Drunken driving is a traffic violation in India, leading to increased road crashes and fatalities. This study aims to examine the riding performance and safety of alcohol-impaired Motorized Two Wheeler (MTW) riders in Indian traffic conditions. The study will explore the detrimental effects of Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels on MTW riders' performance degradation and its implications on safety during traffic events on urban and rural roads. A literature review will be conducted to identify research gaps, followed by a questionnaire and scenario generation in a MTW driving simulator. 100 Indian licensed MTW riders will be recruited to collect data in sober and drunk states. The data will be compared to examine the effect of various BAC levels on riding performance measures. Statistical analysis techniques will be used to model the data, with important findings and conclusions highlighted. The 1.5-year project will focus on data analysis and conclusions, followed by a six-month focus on reviewing policies of India and other countries on drunken driving. Based on the study results, policy suggestions and recommendations will be provided for improving driving conditions in India.
