Project Overview

Platooning of vehicles is a coordinated movement of vehicles in close proximity on shared routes, enabling vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication and expected to be a key part of future intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Platoon traffic scenario (PTS) offers various benefits over non-platooned traffic, such as enhanced V2V connectivity, improved vehicle safety, road capacity, and reduced fuel consumption and pollution. This proposal addresses the challenges related to the efficient design and analysis of modern V2X systems with platooned traffic. It proposes a communication architecture for PTS with platooned vehicles spread on roads and a cellular network to provide connectivity to the vehicles. The framework focuses on the design of a comprehensive analytical framework to study PVCS, capturing accurate modeling of road layout, vehicles on these roads, and the cellular network. The proposed model uses a novel triply-stochastic point process called Poisson line process driven Matern cluster process (PLP-MCP) in its core. The proposal presents a V2X communication architecture for PTS combining various types of communication, such as direct mode communication, direct mode broadcast, and direct mode caching. The framework is used to describe the relationship between system parameters and communication quality. The heterogeneous architecture allows devices to select the best out of PH and BS and band out of mmWave and sub-6 GHz. The study also investigates design aspects including load distribution, dynamic beamforming, energy efficiency, and communication performance. The framework can help understand the interplay of platooning and vehicular network performance, which is largely unexplored from the perspective of rigorous system-level analysis in the current literature.
