Project Overview

Heavy metals are a significant global concern due to population growth, industrialization, agricultural use of chemicals, and waste disposal technologies. This issue is particularly significant in lake sediments, particularly in emerging nations like India. Assessing the regional level of heavy metal pollution and contamination risks is crucial. However, most research has been local, reporting on single lakes, and no substantial study has been conducted on a regional or larger scale. This study aims to compare heavy metal concentrations in lake sediments from various regions and analyze pollution sources and controls under the same risk assessment method. The goal is to analyze ecological dangers posed by contaminated lake sediments and provide solutions for managing polluted lakes on a regional scale. The study will be conducted in Maharashtra, a state with numerous metropolitan areas with increasing anthropogenic input on the ecosystem. The comprehensive analysis of selected lakes will provide an overview of spatial variability and pollution levels. Based on the heavy metal analysis, proper mitigating action will be conducted to enhance the condition of lakes above the allowable limit.
