Project Overview

The research aims to design and control the structure and properties of all-solid electrolyte polymer/hybrid membrane separators for Li-ion and Li-metal batteries through molecular engineering of the base polymer and the influence of nano-filler in the polymer matrix. This involves fabricating films, mats, and nonwoven fabrics using conventional solution casting and electrospinning techniques, and their property evaluation, including coin/pouch cell batteries. Li-ion batteries have gained popularity due to their high energy density, low self-discharge, easy maintenance, and a greater number of charge-discharge cycles. However, they have safety concerns due to their flammability and leakability issues. To enhance the lithium-ion conductivity and energy density capacities of these all-solid-state batteries, significant structural engineering of the polymer chains and the use of suitable nanofillers in the polymer matrix will be integrated through solution cast film and electrospun fiber, mat/nonwoven fabric. The project aims to develop a new generation of high-performance, technologically advanced separators for Li-ion batteries combining microscopic polymer design and making new hybrid materials using electrospinning as one of the processing tools. This next-generation separator will also open up a new basis for safe and efficient gel electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries. The main focus is to develop a chemically, thermally, mechanically, and dimensionally stable polymer electrolyte membrane with high Li-ion conductivity and enhanced transference number.
