About
Power systems' resilience is crucial for reducing supply interruptions and quickly recovering from them. In India, power grids have experienced frequent tripping of transmission lines and generators, reducing power transfer capacity. The converter interfaced generation has added challenges to running electricity networks reliably due to its stochastic nature. Real-time monitoring and mitigation of these oscillations are essential for power system reliability. Advancements in Phasor measurement unit (PMU) technology assisted wide-area measurement systems (WAMS) can facilitate dynamic monitoring and control. This proposal aims to explore future energy management system applications, such as robust PMU-based oscillation monitoring, real-time inertia estimation, and cyber-resilient wide area control. The first task is to develop robust methods for estimating region-wise equivalent inertia and dynamic stress indicators for power systems dominated by sustainable energy sources. The second task is to develop novel methodologies for oscillatory stability indicators and a machine learning-based data mining tool for monitoring and prediction of stability indicators. The third task is to develop a novel cyber resilient wide-area damping controller (WADC) to mitigate the effect of possible cyber-attacks in hierarchical and decentralized ways. The final task is to develop and deliver a Python-based software package to integrate suggested cyber resilient algorithms for enhanced power system monitoring and control. This proposal provides a comprehensive solution for network operators to use these algorithms for assessing and enhancing grid stability metrics, which can lead to measurable economic benefits.
