Project Overview

This project entitles, "In-band Full-Duplex (IBFD) Antennas for V2X Communications." The project aims to deliver transmitter and receiver antennas that can be used for V2X Communication. In this project, several full-duplex antenna systems will be designed for IBFD-V2X communications. Initially, a full-duplex V2X antenna system for sub-6 GHz having operating bandwidth of 5~10% will be designed. Different methods will be employed to increase the port-to-port isolation of the antennas. Further, in place of using separate antenna elements, a co-radiator will be used in which the transmitting antenna and receiving antenna will share the radiating part. New schemes will be deployed to increase inter-port isolation. As the next objective of this proposal, a full-duplex V2X antenna system for millimeter wave frequency spectrum will be designed. Due to higher path loss at millimeter wave frequencies, either array configuration or MIMO technologies are being utilized. To mitigate the issue of path loss, high gain antennas are being deployed. The major challenge in millimeter wave IBFD antenna is the isolation between the transmitting and receiving antenna array due to its highly dense and compact size. Novel isolation techniques will be explored in this project. Finally, dual band IBFD-V2X communication systems are required for diverse services, the frequency spectrum needs to be used more effectively to meet the increasing date rate demands and accordingly, they require dual band antennas. As the last objective of this project, full-duplex dual band antenna IBFD-V2X systems which operates in sub-6 GHz as well as in millimeter frequency bands will be designed. The IBFD antenna will be simultaneously operating at sub-6 GHz for V2P and V2I communication and in millimeter bands with 360° coverage for V2V and V2I communications.
