Project Overview

The internal combustion engine-based automobile sector is facing challenges due to high prices, space constraints, and charging infrastructure. Interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors are a suitable choice for EV applications due to their high power and torque density, efficiency, and low torque ripple. However, IPM motors also have drawbacks such as cost and availability of magnetic materials, sensitivity to temperature and magnetic field strength, and potential demagnetization. To address these challenges, research gaps in IPM include design optimization, magnetic materials selection, magnet orientation, control schemes, and battery charger integration with power converters. This project focuses on designing a cost-effective multi-phase IPM motor while maintaining high performance, efficiency, and reliability. By increasing the number of phases, the power and torque density of the IPM motor can be increased. Additionally, an integrated battery charger (IBC) is designed to reduce the overall cost of driving by using the same converter used to drive the motor as a charger for the EV battery. The project aims to design and develop a low-cost, efficient, and high power density multiphase IPM motor for EV applications, develop an integrated power converter with charging and driving features, train manpower to become self-reliant in the electric vehicle industry, publish publications, and transfer technology through patents. The project will help Indian EV manufacturing companies adopt cheap, efficient, reliable electric motor drives suitable for the "Make in India" and "AatmaNirbhar Bharat" vision.
