About

Fire is crucial in human life for food preparation, warmth, and protection from predators. However, uncontrolled handling can lead to fatalities and economic loss. To address these hazards, efforts have been made to create efficient flame retardants to protect property and prevent deaths. Textiles, particularly polymeric materials like plastic, are highly flammable and can leach from their surfaces. India generates 15 million tons of plastic waste annually, which is challenging to decompose naturally and causes environmental harm. Deep eutectic solvents, binary or ternary mixtures of compounds, are being studied for their low volatility, non-flammability, low vapor pressure, and chemical and thermal stability. Developing novel, easy-to-implement, environmentally friendly, mild, and cost-effective flame retardant materials from nonbiodegradable polymeric wastes remains a challenge. This project aims to demonstrate the synthesis and optimization of phosphorous functionalized nondegradable waste polymers like polyurethane foam, nylon-66, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyvinyl chloride to prepare flame retardant materials. These materials will be coated on fabric and wood substrates for flame retardant properties, applicable for commercial and industrial applications. In conclusion, the development of flame retardant materials from nonbiodegradable polymeric waste is a significant challenge. Proper synthesis, optimization, and application of these materials are essential for reducing the harmful effects on human life and the environment.
