About
Simulating a quantum system with another one respecting the same laws as the system of interest forms the foundation of many theoretical studies leading to the surge of employing quantum computers to explain quantum systems. Researchers propose to extend the success in this regard seen in several areas of physics to nuclear physics. They will start by refining the mapping of the quantum many-body states and operators to that of qubits by studying suitable encodings (for the former) and transformations (for the latter). They plan to study the efficiency of these methods for chosen nuclear Hamiltonians, starting with the one representing the deuteron. While benchmarking the calculations by studying the observables related eigenvalues like the binding energy, we shall define appropriate quantum circuits to calculate the expectation value of other observables using the obtained eigenvectors. These methods shall be standardized by calculating quantities like the electric quadrupole moment of the deuteron. They propose to extend the quantum circuits to calculate giant resonances in nuclei within the linear response approach. Generalizing these circuits for electric dipole response at lower energies should be possible to study exotic systems like the Halo nuclei. The efficiency of quantum algorithms to handle non-Hermitian problems also will be tested in this regard. In this manner, building various blocks for applying quantum computing to study atomic nuclei will have a long-term implication and is expected to deliver path-breaking results.
