About
Magnetic materials with non-collinear spin structures can exhibit exotic phenomena like the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), topological Hall effect (THE), and magnetic skyrmions (SkXs). Skys are topologically protected swirling spin textures that are promising for building next-generation magnetic memories due to their stable topology and small size. SkX-based racetrack memory is advantageous over domain walls due to defect insensitivity and small depining energy. However, problems like the skyrmion Hall effect (SkXHE) need to be addressed before a practical device can be materialized. This project aims to study transverse transport properties (THE) to characterize the motion of SkXs in a racetrack device. The success of an SkX-based memory device depends on its ability to stabilize SkX at zero magnetic fields and a wide temperature range. SkXs are experimentally observed in a small class of chiral magnetic systems with broken inversion symmetry, and stabilization, detection, and manipulation of these underlying spin structures are the major tasks in spintronics.
