About
supramolecular assembly is a natural phenomenon where molecules spontaneously form aggregates without human intervention, controlling selectivity, rate of conversion, and kinetics. This process is facilitated by the synthesis of precise organic molecules in confined reaction environments, such as reactive pockets, membranes, micelles, vesicles, emulsions, gels, helical tubules, polyelectrolyte nanoparticles, cells, and fibrillar network structures. The chemical reactivity of a molecule within confined media is different from conventional ones, making this a discrete field of investigation. The confined reaction environments obtained by self-assembling natural carbohydrate-based molecules can change the essential properties of inclusion molecules, influencing chemical reactivity. The energy required for a chemical reaction in confined reaction media is provided by light or self-generated energy, such as photochemical and electrochemical reactions. Investigating asymmetric transformations involving photo- and electrochemical reactions in confined reaction environments can make a step change in conventional organic synthesis. The pharmaceutical market in India, valued at 42 billion UsD in 2021-22, is expected to grow threefold in the next decade. The generation of a library of organic molecules with selectivity and stereo- and regiospecificity using proposed confined reaction media will provide a roadmap for the pharmaceutical industries to achieve their targets by replacing conventional reactions.
