Project Overview

The discovery of off-line GC-Ms has revolutionized chemical reaction monitoring, but online mass spectrometry has gained significant traction. Online Ms can characterize short-lived and unstable reaction products, which may not survive sample handling. Despite its sensitivity and specificity, online mass spectrometry is underutilized in mechanistic organic chemistry. This proposal combines synthetic chemistry and online mass spectrometry to analyze fleeting/unstable reaction intermediates in real-time, helping identify the exact reaction pathway of designed novel reactions. The project aims to study the in-depth mechanism of unprecedented reactions, which are leading to the generalized synthesis of pharmaceutically useful molecules and are difficult to conform by traditional control experiments. The developed online EsI-Ms technique has significant potential to uncover various aspects of chemical reactions, but it is underdeveloped and needs further exploration. This project will not only help the PI with the "Mechanistic Analysis/Confirmation of Organic Reactions by Capturing Fleeting/stable Intermediates by Real-time Reaction Monitoring," but also open new areas for researchers in medicinal chemistry, life sciences, biotechnology, and environmental sciences to uncover related aspects of ongoing research.
