Project Overview

Particulate matter (PM) is a highly dangerous pollutant in urban areas worldwide, with sources including traffic, industry, construction, agriculture, and fossil fuel power plants. Exposure to fine dust particles can cause health issues such as eye, nose, throat, lung irritation, sneezing, coughing, runny nose, and shortness of breath. The study will be conducted in Guwahati, the largest and rapidly growing metropolitan city of Assam, where land use and landcover have significantly changed over the last century. The increasing number of vehicles and emissions contributes to the degradation of air quality, leading to an increase in pollutants. The damage caused by PM1 depends on its chemical content, and chemical characterization of PM is crucial to understand its exact properties. There is still a substantial lack of knowledge about the health effects of fine particles in Guwahati, so detecting key components causing diseases due to PM is essential for accurate diagnoses. The proposed study aims to improve the health system in Indian cities by examining the relationship between air quality and public health. National policies or proper action should be implemented by the government to reduce air pollution and improve public health. PM is also a major contributor to air pollution, decreasing visibility and causing nasal and upper respiratory tract health problems. Monitoring air pollution levels is essential in urban areas like Guwahati, and instantaneous measurement should be taken to improve local air quality and reduce health hazards.
