About
sediment transport modeling has been extensively studied, with some models used for estimating suspended sediment and bed load estimation. However, none are universally accepted, and research is ongoing. The main focus is on erosion estimation based on bed load, which can be correlated with bank erosion to identify critical sites and prepare a bank erosion vulnerable map for any river. The proposed project will be carried out in the Jhelum River, a meandering river in northern India, where bank erosion is a major problem for infrastructural development. The government is working to protect banks from erosion, but no sediment flow modeling study has been conducted in this river. This study aims to provide a key feature for engineers, planners, and researchers to make informed decisions in different sectors. The Jhelum River basin is chosen for the project due to its unique features and the risk of severe bank erosion, which decreases river flow capacity and leads to floods, loss of life, agricultural fields, and infrastructure. Bank protection work for the entire river is not economically viable, so a study identifying vulnerable erosion-prone areas is recommended. The Jhelum River basin is still under development, with new development proposals and landslides affecting rail and road construction projects. A bank erosion vulnerability map will be useful in various aspects and interdisciplinary work. The river is near an institute, making it convenient for researchers to conduct field experiments and generate field data.
