Project Overview

Ocean surface waves have become a crucial field of study for the generation of power, as they are a clean and sustainable renewable energy resource. India, with its large coastline, can utilize breakwater systems, coastal facilities, and energy extraction technologies to harness the dense ocean wave energy. These systems can be upgraded with utilities like coastal protection and aquatic reservoirs, integrating with floating and submerged structures. These structures are most efficient with mild wave conditions and are ideal for safeguarding small boat ports. A hybrid model that incorporates a power take-off system into floating and submerged structures has the potential to provide coastline defense and commercialized wave energy extraction. However, there is limited research on the extraction of renewable wave energy by floating and submerged structures as PTOs. The proposal aims to model and simulate the process of wave energy extraction using different configurations of floating and submerged structures integrated with a PTOs in a single/double-layer fluid. The proposed methods will include semi-analytical and numerical techniques, such as the eigenfunction expansion method, boundary element method, coupled boundary element - finite element method, spectral method, and related mathematical techniques. The hydrodynamic performance of the models under both linear and non-linear waves with variations in wave and structural parameters will be investigated. The results will help researchers and engineers construct wave energy converter devices for wave power extraction, creating a serene environment to safeguard coastal regions from high wave action.
