About

India, the world's diabetic capital, is experiencing a rapid increase in its diabetic population, with over 25% of patients suffering from diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). These ulcers can lead to mobility impairment, pressure ulcers, and other impairments, potentially causing amputation. However, early detection, rehabilitation, and treatment of DFU remain underdeveloped in India. The 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat' initiative aims to provide a technological solution for early diagnosis and treatment of DFU. The existing sensors are low in sensitivity, unable to predict ulcer onset and are rigid and bulky, hindering their wearability. To address this challenge, a wearable 3D printed triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based pressure sensor is being developed. The sensor's sensitivity is expected to be three times higher than state-of-the-art DFU pressure sensors. To improve current density, a 3D printed hybrid electrode will be developed, which will enhance capacitance and surface charge density, thereby improving the sensor's sensitivity. Additionally, a snail-inspired polyurethane-based viscoelastic polymer will be used as the triboelectric layer in the TENG, ensuring effective mechanical compliance with human skin and allowing for prolonged wear without discomfort.
