About

The seismic safety of structures is typically ensured through ductility-based seismic design, and vibration control devices like tuned mass dampers and tuned liquid dampers are implemented to mitigate seismic vibration. Tuned liquid damper (TLD) systems have gained attention due to their low installation and maintenance costs and potential efficiency in reducing structural vibration. TLDs are passive vibration control devices used to suppress vibration in high-rise structures excited by wind/earthquake forces. However, TLD systems are not common for low-rise, short-period structures due to the difficulty in finding a feasible length of the liquid container for tuning. A compliant mechanism of tuning bypassing the dependency of liquid container length was proposed in a study by Pandey et al. (2019), but its applicability to low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) buildings has not been explored. The proposed research aims to explore the applicability of the compliant tuned liquid damper in suppressing the vibration response of low-rise RC structures. The optimal parameters of the compliant tuned liquid damper will be obtained through an optimization study, followed by further numerical and experimental studies to evaluate the efficacy of the system. The structure damper system will be seismically excited by selected ground motions, and the dynamic characteristics of the fabricated building model will be identified through free vibration tests. This project's significance can drive the development of a low-cost vibration suppression device for low-rise houses constructed at large scale under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
