About

The project aims to develop functional and sustainable food packaging films, primarily derived from biobased or agriwaste materials, to facilitate safe transport, protection, and storage of food products. The current food packaging system is dominated by synthetic polymers, which pose a threat to landfilling and environmental pollution due to their frequent discarding and non-biodegradability. To address this issue, biodegradable food packaging materials are needed. The developed polymer nanocomposite films can serve as smart food packaging materials with suitable modifications. The objectives of the project include selecting or synthesizing suitable FDA-approved sustainable polymeric materials, preparing functional fillers/reinforcements from agro wastes, extending the functionality by making nanocomposites, preparing nanocomposite films with desired properties, and comparing their performance with commercially accepted/widely used food packaging materials. Polymer-based materials have replaced conventional materials like paper, paper board, metal, and glass in food packaging applications due to their convenience, versatility, and tailor-made properties. On average, one-third of food produced is wasted through the supply chain, resulting in losses up to one trillion US$ per annum globally. Efficient food packaging systems can contribute to minimizing food waste. Polymer nanocomposite-based functional packaging materials are highly researched due to their advantages such as light weight, easy processability, design flexibility, good barrier property, and low cost compared to paper, glass, and metal-based food packaging. Strict food safety and quality control regulations have led to the development of smart food packaging, which includes both active and intelligent packaging.
