About
Perovskite solar cells (PvSC) have the potential to be used in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), particularly in urban areas. PvSC technology offers the advantage of being colourful, but it can be achieved through internal modifications or external structures. This project proposes using an externally integrated distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) to achieve near-total reflection within a target wavelength range and high transmittance outside of the range. The grating will be deposited using a cost-effective solution-processed method, making it non-invasive and PvSC friendly. The dielectric materials chosen for the solution-processed DBR (sDBR) will be chosen based on their cost-effectiveness and environmental long-term stability. Compositional and device engineering, along with electro-optical modeling, will be used to identify materials and their thickness to achieve a balance between efficiency and stability. The goal is to design and fabricate standalone PvSC with an efficiency of ≥ 15% and a lifetime of ≥2000 hours with pixel size ≥ 1 cm2. The proposed approach minimizes the electronic properties of PvSCs and uses an anti-reflective coating to increase transmittance in other wavelengths. The proposed scheme and positive demonstration of a stable PvSC with colour tunability and scalability with the use of non-invasive sDBR will open up important possibilities for PvSCs in BIPV applications.
