Project Overview

Leptospirosis, which occurs worldwide and is more rampant in tropical and subtropical regions, is an infectious disease caused by Leptospira, a bacterium, that affects animals and humans. The transmission of Leptospira bacteria is through the urine of infected animals. The aim of the project is to understand Leptospirosis epidemiology and risk factors in both rural and urban populations through mathematical modeling. To achieve that, epidemiological models to understand the spread of leptospirosis will be formulated, which may include some vaccination, impulsive in nature, and recruitment control programs to prevent the spread of leptospirosis in livestock in India. The project will also explore mathematical tools and approaches to describe the transmission of Leptospira (bacteria) in multi-host, multi-species in rural and urban areas in India. The outcome or results of the study will help in informing the decision-makers and public health professionals about those critical areas and groups that characterize the occupation risk factors for Leptospirosis in India on a priority basis.
